Up I-5 trying to keep you alive, everybody’s haunting someone
Still so far and you’ve hated the car ever since you were a young one
And it’s one step back he is stuck in the track, not what I wanted. Now the moment’s passed they’re still hitting the gas, everyone’s going somewhere
Before he died he looked into my eyes, I guess everybody’s haunted
I’ve been so far and I still hate my car, never wanna drive again. But it’s up I-5 gotta keep us alive, seems like everybody’s haunted

If I was the mercury
And you were the fog
I’d ask you to deliver me
To the lichen on a log
They’re the lungs of our remembering
They’re a map of the big world
A map of the long world
And I’m tangled in the food web now
We met over the ocean
We met over the factories
It may seem like science fiction
That we’re as good as family
And holding hands doesn’t feel so strange
As we drift through a valley
Roll over the coastal range
We're tangled in the food web now

At the Opening
01:04
|
|||
there in my kitchen wilts a flower on the window sill, stuck inside a bottle.
and though so bright last week now nothing much is happening, no light inside the tunnel.
but from the opening
the wind comes through the screen
what stories from the streets, the cars, the seeds do breezes bring?
my hand in the ground
an old familiar sound
i curse the cold and lonely star that we all circle 'round

Over
02:33
|

Grandma she lost all her memories
but she never forgot where we hid the keys
she flew through the turnpike so naturally
over and over
Before then she knit me a cardigan
her mind not quite as sharp as it could've been
but her needle it was and it travels again
over and under
My uncle he questioned her sanity
she said, "I'll list out the names of my family!"
though they were long dead if they ever did breathe
she had 'em over for dinner
The doctor he wanted to clear the fog
but didn't know how so just played along
she said, "take me out back, shoot me like a dog,"
and I couldn't blame her
When the doctors are bankers and the surgeons do better
quick checks for the insurance men and blood-letters
that every day we are sicker and deader
is it any wonder?
So grandma she died in captivity
she went in her sleep they say peacefully
now what to do with the pieces in front of me?
I'll put 'em all back together
in a different order
yes, over and over
that's what I would've told her

Sauk River

Went for a swim in Sauk River
Where I saw the moon who gets bigger
every June
Fish cutting through blue-green water
Calling for you, you Sauk River
starting again

Never cutting my hair again
Had a conversation with my balding head
Said we gotta live and take it while we can, so
I'm never cutting my hair again
Gonna let it catch a little ride on the breeze
Down past my shoulders and below my knees
Never cutting the grass again
the killer weeds are gonna take control
Choking out the onions now they’re running the show, so
I'm never cutting the grass again
Vines are creeping down from the roof
Strangling the roses yeah they’ll get me too, ooh
Never cutting no corners again
Such little time thought I was making the most
But I missed the bus and I burnt my toast, so
Never cutting no corners again
Gonna move through the world more carefully
Doesn’t matter if im late, don’t wanna spill my tea

Long are the tunnels
Longer, the untunnelled reach
10 days by traveling
1 day, forever each
Alone is unbeing
A mark for which no word exists
The blood of a worker
The beauty of a bygone Queen
The head of a worker
The body of a bygone Queen
Long are the tunnels
Longer the untunnelled reach
Alone is unbeing
A mark for which no word exists

Walk In Front
02:45
|
|||
be my friend, be my savior, be my crutch
walk in front, wanna see the world but not too much
where i go, the dying flame is the one i touch
i’ll hold you soon, you’ve been away but not for long
and while you’re gone i dust the shelves your clothes are on
in my songs, hiding in the chords and drums

So how about it little darling?
Let’s store our acorns for the season
A little distance from your troubles
A little comfort for your grief
In an oak tree by the dozen
We’ll save our acorns from the acorn thieves
One nest for three mothers
A family under your wing and under my wing
By the side of the freeway
I saw goats in a marsh
Tastes a little bitter at the bottom
Feels a little scary at the top
Hear the secrets between oak trees
At the secret words they sing
All the acorns fall at once to the meadow
10,000 holes in the granary

Slowness Is Their Power
02:36
|
|||
I watch the spiders in the corner
The distance they travel every hour
Some might turn away, but me I let them stay
Sometimes they join me in the shower
I don’t live here any more than they do
After all I am just a renter
They eat up all the bugs and keep them off the rugs
I think their slowness is their power
I watch the spiders in the corner
The great long distances they cover
Some might freak out and scream
But I like to let them be
Because I don’t live here any more than they do
And they no less than me

No Curses!
02:07
|
|||
No curses no spells no good reason to hurt yourself
No tomorrow only tonight no never heard of no bus on time
No rush hour no 9 to 5 no hydropower only salmon jivin’
No bad seasons no bad stars no reason to want to live on mars
No forever no holy shrine no techno-fixes no love left behind
No methane crackers no poisoned reefs no cluster munitions, yes, no joint chiefs
No bad music no such thing no note too sour not to wind it up and sing
No books-a-burning no empty shelves no good reason not to ask for help
No curses no spells no good reason to hurt yourself
No tomorrow only tonight no never heard of no bus on time
